In medicine, a way of separating colloidal
particles from noncolloidal (crystalloid)
ones in solution using a semipermeable
membrane (which allows the passage of the
smaller, noncolloidal particles but not the
larger, colloidal ones). Dialysis can thus
separate, for example, salts from proteins in
blood, which is the natural process in the
filtration system of the kidneys and the
engineered equivalent in a dialysis
(artificial kidney) machine.
